SHINGLE COLOR: HOW DO YOU CHOOSE?

When you are considering replacing your roof, it is wise to put serious thought into the color of the shingles you choose. A roof is a large investment that is not easily (or cheaply) swapped out if you happened to choose a color that did not work with the other esthetic aspects of your home and neighborhood. Given that a roof makes up to 40% of your home’s exterior, it’s appearance has a large impact on your home’s resale value and curb appeal. Looking at color samples for shingles can become overwhelming quickly. To help you with this choice, we are providing you with some tips for choosing a color you will be happy with for years to come.

Consider the color of other elements on your home, such as the brick, stone, siding, or stucco. The following color combinations work well:

  • Gray or blue homes look best with dark grey or black roofs.Brown, cream or tan-colored homes work well with a brown or light brown roof.
  • White homes look particularly striking with dark gray or black roofs.
  • If you have multi-colored brick or stone home, stick with a single-colored shingle, as both multi-color stone/brick and multi-colored shingles will make your house appear too busy.
  • If your home is green, red, or yellow, you have more flexibility in terms of what will compliment your roof well. Brown, gray, or black can all look great.

You may sell your home in the future, so you want to think about curb appeal and the effect that the color choice will have on your home’s resale value.

  • Roofs with good resale values tend to be neutral colored, such as tan, cream, brown, black or gray. These colors are classic and tend to stay in style over time.
  • Trendier roofs include shingles that are mixed, with various color combinations of browns or blacks and grays.
  • High contrast colors (e.g., a white home and black roof or a cream-colored home and dark brown roof) will highlight the features of your home. Low contrast colors, on the other hand, will be more likely to hide defects.

Remember the effect that colors can have on the apparent size of your home.

  • Putting a lighter colored shingle on your home will make it appear larger, whereas a darker shingle tends to make a house look smaller.

Think about your neighbors.

  • Sometimes, your neighborhood association may have rules regarding what roof colors are allowed. Make sure you look into this before replacing.
  • Also, it is good practice not to use the same colored roof as your neighbor. At the same time, it is also wise not to choose a roof color that will clash with your neighbors’ roof. Your goal should be to choose a color that will look beautiful on both your home and the entire street.

Ask your contractor to provide you color samples.

  • Place these samples side by side your siding/brick/stone and any other outdoor elements it will need to coordinate with. If a small sample of a certain color clashes, you can be assured that an entire roof would be an eye-sore.
